Camera Flashes Are Out Use a Lamp Instead

Bad Flash PhotographyWant better pictures? Unless you don’t have any other choice, I would never suggest using a camera’s built-in flash. The light is harsh, sharp and completely robs you of all color. It’s true, sometimes there’s nothing we can do. When you are indoors, and the light is low, shooting with built-in flash is the only way to get enough exposure, without blurring the image. If you have a high end camera that takes great photos with low light, then by all means, use it. However, not everyone can afford the expensive stuff. This article is about the times when you have other options, it is best to use alternate sources of light. Here are a few scenarios for getting good lighting

Types of situations for best lighting

If you are in a home during the day time, natural lighting is the best. Stand near a window where the light hits you as directly as possible. Not from the side, and not from the back. We want as much of the face exposed to the natural light as possible. Turn off the flash for this.

If you are in a home at night. Get a lamp or any bright light and point it at the subject. This works wonders if you have a good lamp bright lamp. Tungsten or Halogen lamps are best. If you ONLY have a incandescent lamp, it’ll have to do. Although the color may turn out a bit on the warm side, depending on the type of bulb, it still illuminates the subject much better, while still keeping the background in tact. You can always use Photoshop and adjust the colors later.

Lamp Lighting

If you are outdoors, the best suggestion is to use the sun wisely. The best time to shoot is during morning sunrise light, or sunset. The light is soft and perfect pitch for photographing people. If for some reason you care caught mid day. The sun will be incredibly harsh, what this means is there will be lots of shadow.  Redirect the light using something like a reflector is an option you can take if you are really into it. Otherwise I would suggest waiting until the sun dies down.

There are always ways to get better lighting. If you can splurge on expensive equipment and high end flashes, that would be best. For now, keeping things simple. stick to these tips for best results.

Getting that Baby on Film

baby photographyTaking photographs of babies can be one of the hardest shots you may ever have to take. This is true even if the photo is one of your own children, as often they just do not want to co-operate or sit still long enough for you to get the perfect picture of them. It can turn into a major undertaking.

The first thing to understand when attempting to take of photo of a baby is that they are in charge of the situation. The whole process of the shot has to be built around the child but there are certain tricks you can use which professional photographers have perfected. These tricks of the trade will ensure that you get the perfect shot of the baby, no matter what mood they happen to be in at the start of the shoot.

Baby’s are always in a better mood after they have been fed and are well rested. They feel happy when they are surrounded by people they know and trust. They love being the centre of attention. As a parent you can make sure that all this is set in place before you attempt to take your photograph. If you have booked an appointment with a professional photographer to take his or her portrait in a local studio, this may be not that easy to do.

This is a very good reason to avoid taking a baby to a studio to have their photos taken. It is always a lot easier to set up a shoot at home, where the child is happy and relaxed. If the baby is happy, you stand a very good chance of capturing that all important smile that will make a portrait of a lifetime. Many professional photographers understand the situation, and are only too happy to come to your home to get the perfect shot of your baby. The best part is that they will work with you throughout the shoot.

There are several advantages to organizing a shoot at home and one of these is that you know just when your baby is at his or her best. You can book the shoot for the time of day that will suit you and if the photographer arrives whilst baby is taking a nap, this gives you all the time in the world to set the stage for the shoot. By not having to drive to the studio, you are eliminating a lot of factors which may just change your little angels’ mood.

Babies always feel more comfortable with people they know, so if the photographer can meet your child and get to play with them before they start to take photos, this is a brilliant way of making the baby relax and enjoy themselves. This can mean that the photographs will turn out to be very good especially if baby sees the camera as a toy that they want to play with.

When it comes to choosing the right type of camera to take shots of your baby, you need to use a small portable one which is easy to carry. Like this you will get the chance to take some location shots which always work that much better. A small camera will not alarm the baby either. Digital cameras are great because you can take lots of photos without having to reload it. Make sure the camera is a good quality one that will take high resolution photos. This means when you do get that perfect photo, it will transfer to portrait printing really well.

If you set the room up with lots of toys and a nice backdrop, your little baby will start to play with the toys and be a lot more relaxed and natural. You can get them to interact with their siblings or the photographer in a happy way so that they don’t even notice the camera or the sound that it makes.

Getting photos of your baby laughing always makes for a nice photograph, so if they are happy playing with their toys, you are bound to get some really beautiful shots as they happily get involved with the games they are playing. You can encourage laughter by making the familiar sounds that your baby responds to, which often makes the perfect photo opportunity.

Knowing what pleases your baby and how to make them smile is the best way to get them to interact with the camera, so you can coax them into a good mood and achieve the best photograph which will last a lifetime.

Choose A Subject for Your Photos

Choosing A Subject

subject photographyPhotography is a wonderful hobby that lets you decide what subjects you want to capture on film. A basic knowledge of all the techniques will set you up to take first class photos of anything you really like. Most photographers whether they are professionals or amateurs like you, find a medium that they are particularly interested in and then concentrate on their technique. This is how they improve them and find all the various ways of achieving the perfect shot. Photography is not dissimilar to other artistic hobbies such as painting and sketching, and once you get your eye trained to recognize a perfect photograph, the rest simply falls into place.

Knowing what you would like to photograph is the key to finding which subjects interest you the most. It could be wildlife, and this means you have to wait for your subject to come into view before you can take your shot. Wildlife parks are a great choice of locations when you want to take photographs of animals or birds, but it is still left very much up to chance as to whether you will see any Elk or Dear. The best idea is to watch the seasons, because at certain times of the year you stand a better chance of catching a glimpse of them when they either come down to the mountains to graze or mate. The Rocky Mountain National Park is a great location for photographing wildlife, but if you are lucky enough to be in Alaska, then you may spy a Bald Eagle and in Florida you will definitely come across both heron and cranes.

Choosing your subject means practicing the right technique for that particular task and many of us are limited to what is around us. Landscapes offer a great way of taking shots of everything you find around you, but if you are on holiday then use the location to takes shots of the area as well, it is all good practice. When it comes to photography the world is your oyster.

Once you have decided just what you would like to photograph, you need to go out and find your subjects. Anything you see around you can suddenly become an interesting subject even a tree with a strange knot in it could catch your eye. You need to check out the lighting and decide which angle would be best to shoot the photograph. The way the light hits the tree will be the deciding factor of where you need to stand to get the best shot of it.

You need a good eye when photographing a subject and you have to pay attention to detail. Very often the best subject is not that obvious so you need to look carefully around you and observe all that you see. You may spy a spiders’ web hidden behind some leaves on a tree and if you look closely you may even see the spider itself. This can be the perfect subject for your photograph. To get the perfect shot of the silky threads and the pattern of the web requires lot of attention to the technique you use for the shot.

Training your eye to see a subject that will make a good photograph, is the best tool you will have at your disposal. The light and angle that you see the subject in will be the deciding factor as to whether or not it will turn out to be a good photograph. If you walk slowly through the countryside, you will come across subjects that may be of interest to you. Capturing a single moment when animals or people do something that they may never do again is simply a click away. This is why many photography enthusiasts always carry their cameras with them wherever they go. It becomes a habit and then a hobby which may even lead to earning money, if you find that you have a natural talent for photography. When your photographs get really good you can even start displaying them in places where other people may wish to buy them.
